Abstract

Two fishlice, both females, were preserved livefrom the body surface of a loricariid catfish, Ancistrus ranunculusMuller, Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon 1994, collected in the middle Xingu River. The two specimens are herein described as Argulus celioin. sp. and distinguished from congeners based on first and second antennaecharacteristics, pigmentationpattern, carapace and abdomensize and shape as well as the lack of accessory, post-antennal spines on the thorax, abdomen and ventral region of the carapace. Reports of branchiurans parasitizing loricariid catfishes are scarce in the published literature, highlighting a need to examine such taxa as potential hosts.
